Hyper-V and VM Ware

14. November 2013 von Bastian Moldenhauer

Like always the devil is in the details. If you install Visual Studio 2013 and add Windows Phone 8 and then try/install VMWare Player it want work:

The problem is that VM-Ware and Microsofts Hyper-V-Feature want work at the same time.

Best solution for this problem that I found is to create two boot entrys in your boot menu. One that turns Hyper-V off and one that turns Hyper-V on.

This way you can choose during your startup what you need and can easily switch depending on your needs.

First thing to do is to copy your current boot entry. So create an admin-commandline and check which entry you need to copy.

As you can see, I only have one entry with the ID {current}.

Now copy the correct entry and add some description telling what this boot entry does.

Verify the boot entry

As you can see a second boot entry was created with the id {95222a5b…} and you can see that it still has “hypervisorlaunchtype Auto”. So let‘s change that by first selecting the newly created boot entry and then changing the hypervisor launchtype

As you can see now the hypervisorlaunchtype is changed to “off” and you can now choose at boot time if you need the hypervisor or not.

That‘s it.

Now you can reboot and switch between Hyper-V and VM-Ware (goes for VirtualBox as well).
